About The Position

The University of Pittsburgh’s Theatre Arts Department seeks an experienced and passionate Instructor for our Costume Production and Technology course. This position focuses on teaching students the principles and practices of costume construction for live performance. Instruction combines lectures, demonstrations, and project-based learning with hands-on studio work. Students gain foundational skills in hand-sewing, machine operation, fabric and textile analysis, draping, patterning, and costume finishing, while learning industry-standard health and safety practices. Practical experience is reinforced through required lab hours in the costume shop.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Costume Technology, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in academic costume construction, draping, and patterning.
  • Proficiency in sewing techniques and machine operation.
  • Knowledge of fabrics, textiles, and costume finishing methods.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety practices in a costume shop environment.
  • Ability to teach and mentor students in the costume shop

Nice To Haves

  • MFA in Costume Technology or related discipline.
  • Professional theatre experience in costume construction and wardrobe operations.
  • Experience with inclusive sizing and fitting practices.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging instruction through lectures, demonstrations, and project-based learning in costume construction and technology.
  • Teach hand-sewn stitches, fasteners, and finishing techniques.
  • Train students in safe and proper use of sewing machinery and related tools.
  • Introduce fundamentals of fabrics and textiles, including fiber properties and material selection.
  • Instruct draping and patterning techniques, including commercial and drafted patterns.
  • Supervise hands-on studio work and assess student progress through projects and practical assignments.
  • Maintain costume shop safety standards and ensure proper use of equipment and materials.
  • Develop course materials, syllabi, and assessment tools aligned with industry standards.
