Requirements

  • Master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND a Master’s degree in linguistics, TESL , speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR
  • Master’s degree in literature and writing studies or rhetoric and writing studies (approved comparable degrees at MiraCosta College); OR
  • the equivalent.
  • Applicants who do not possess the EXACT degree major(s) required to meet the minimum qualifications must attach an equivalency narrative and supporting documentation at the time of application.   • a fully satisfied, lifetime California Community College credential authorizing instruction in the appropriate subject matter; AND
  • demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum two years of recent, successful, full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience teaching college composition.
  • Relevant coursework in composition, literature, and/or theory addressing marginalized communities.
  • Experience designing and teaching curricula responsive to the needs of first-generation and historically underrepresented students.
  • Experience with and innovation in using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy in both asynchronous online and in-person/on-ground classes.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty or community leaders in programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals, such as cohort ASE programs, co-requisite composition courses, and/or 8-week sessions.
  • Experience with equity-minded pedagogies and practices to engage and support disproportionately impacted student populations, including but not limited to culturally sustaining curricula and alternative grading methods.
  • Ability to contribute to a Hispanic Serving Institution ( HSI ).
  • Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted student populations with a goal of closing equity gaps ( see Student Equity website ).
  • Ability to contribute to the mission of the college.
