About The Position

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is an 1890 Land-Grant HBCU with a diverse student population, competitive degree offerings and stellar faculty. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, Student Affairs, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • At least 2 years of experience in academic advising, student support services, or teaching in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems (e.g., Workday, Ellucian Banner, Degree Works).
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to student success and a student-centered approach.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching or coordinating General Studies or interdisciplinary programs.
  • Familiarity with academic policies and retention initiatives at HBCUs.
  • Knowledge of national trends in academic advising.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for students enrolled in the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program.
  • Monitor academic progress, provide guidance on course selection, and support students in achieving degree completion.
  • Teach assigned University College courses (e.g., General Studies Seminar and/or Prior Learning Assessment).
  • Maintain up-to-date records of student advising, degree audits, and graduation tracking.
  • Collaborate with faculty and other departments to develop and revise BGS curriculum and program materials.
  • Coordinate academic workshops, student success initiatives, and retention efforts related to General Studies.
  • Provide early alerts and interventions for at-risk students.
  • Communicate and enforce academic policies and procedures in alignment with UAPB and University College standards.
  • Assist with student registration, orientation, and other university-wide academic events.
  • Maintain professional development in higher education advising and instructional best practices.
  • Develop and complete Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) for prospective students intending to transfer into or enroll in the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree program.
