About The Position

Implements and teaches Texas Commission on Law Enforcement educational and training programs, courses, experiences, and services that will directly aid students in achieving educational objectives; maintain assigned office hours and assists in curriculum development and planning.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5- years as an active peace officer
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Peace Officer License
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Instructor License
  • Criminal Justice Associate degree.
  • Or; Two years of related work experience may substitute for this education requirement.
  • Applicants who substitute work experience to meet the education requirement must use additional related work experience to meet the years of "Required Work Experience" for this position.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation for local Austin area travel
  • AND/OR any of the following TCOLE recognized training/instructor certifications: SFST Instructor. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) instructor certification.
  • Fitness Instructor. Nationally recognized fitness certification and/or two years of experience with a background in developing, building, assessing, and maintaining a physical fitness training program either by education or experience.
  • TIMs Instructor. National Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Responder instructor certification from either the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) TIM Coordinating Manager or Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
  • Mental Health Officer Instructor. TCOLE Mental Health Officer certification and the instructor must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a Mental Health Officer or serving as a member of a Crisis Intervention team for at least two years.
  • Arrest & Control Tactics Instructor. Nationally recognized defensive tactics certification and two years of experience with a background in developing, building, assessing, and maintaining a defensive tactics training program either by education or experience.
  • Police Emergency Driving Instructor. Must have received a state recognized police driving instructor certification or hold driving instructor certifications or two years’ experience that supports subject matter expertise.
  • Radio Communications Instructor. Successful completion of the DPS NCIC/TCIC course #4800, “TCIC/TLETS Mobile Operator Training” and hold a current TCOLE instructor certificate.
  • Canine Encounters Instructor. The instructor must be a documented subject matter expert in this topic with a minimum of two years’ experience handling and interacting with canines and hold a TCOLE instructor certificate.
  • Emergency Medical Assistance Instructor. It is highly encouraged to have a documented subject matter expert instructor with experience teaching law enforcement personnel teach this chapter; preferentially a certified ECA/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic.
  • Firearms Instructor. TCOLE / NRA Law Enforcement Division certified instructor with documented subject matter expertise, with a minimum of two years’ experience as a firearms instructor.
  • ALERRT Level 1 Instructor. Must have completed the ALERRT Train the Trainer Instructor course (3315) and hold a current ALERRT Instructor Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches courses as assigned which correlate with the catalog descriptions and course outlines and in a manner designed to assist the student to achieve the specific objectives of the course.
  • Advises students of requirements established by the instructor for meeting course objectives.
  • Periodically examines and informs each student of their progress toward achieving course objectives.
  • Prepares and administers examinations by-program established for the subject area of assignment.
  • Participates in evaluations of curriculum and instruction.
  • Participates in the evaluation of instructional materials.
