About The Position

Montgomery College is seeking an Instructional Lab Coordinator to support the Rockville Art department, with occasional support for the Art department on the Germantown campus. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week (Monday-Friday 8:30am – 5:00 pm), non-exempt, grade 27 bargaining unit position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. This position is not eligible for telework. The Instructional Lab Coordinator ensures the smooth daily operations of the Art Department’s instructional labs, especially the ceramics studio, and provides hands‑on technical support to faculty and students. This role includes managing equipment, maintaining safe and functional workspaces, supporting instructional technology, and coordinating special projects. Ideal candidates will have specialized experience in ceramics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or a related field required (Master of Fine Arts preferred)
  • Three years of instructional support and/ or studio management.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned instructional laboratory discipline including tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Thorough knowledge of ceramics instructional lab tools, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with instructional technology, equipment and educational materials in a ceramic studio and general discipline equipment employed in assigned instructional laboratory.
  • Ability to operate an instructional laboratory.
  • Ability to repair, service and maintain equipment.
  • Ability to recognize hazards and eliminate or reduce potential risks.
  • Ability to apply analytical and thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish work activities.
  • Strong organizational coordination and time management skills.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA training or knowledge of OSHA laboratory standards may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Ceramics Studio Management
  • Oversee all ceramic studio equipment and operations.
  • Perform minor repairs and upkeep on electric and gas kilns, wheels, slab rollers, pug mills, 3D printers, and related tools.
  • Track glaze inventory, mix bulk glazes, and load/unload kilns.
  • Schedule, program, and monitor kiln firings according to project timelines and faculty needs.
  • Digital & Technology Support
  • Act as primary point of contact for instructional technology needs for the Rockville and Germantown Art Departments.
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate IT issues, including submitting and tracking service requests.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date inventory of hardware and software across labs, classrooms, and gallery spaces.
  • Manage and check laptop and iPad carts prior to the start of each semester.
  • Perform routine maintenance on instructional IT equipment and coordinate software/OS updates.
  • Research and recommend new hardware and software; assist with specialized applications not supported by IT.
  • Maintain and set up digital exhibition equipment (projectors, media players, TVs, iMacs, audio equipment).
  • Stay current on emerging digital tools and attend related training events.
  • Safety Management & Coordination
  • Act as Lab Safety Coordinator, partnering with Facilities, Public Safety, and Environmental Safety.
  • Maintain updated Safety Data Sheets for both campuses.
  • Assist with hazardous waste removal and personal protective equipment (PPE) needs.
  • Support faculty in identifying and mitigating safety risks; demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Serve on VPMA Safety Team and acquire and/or maintain OSHA General Industry Trainer certification.
  • Instructional Support (Rockville and Germantown Campuses)
  • Provide day‑to‑day support to ensure labs and programs run smoothly.
  • Work with faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visiting artists.
  • Support department initiatives, events, special projects, and instructional activities.
  • Assist with cross‑campus visual and media arts project requests.
  • Figure Model Coordination (Rockville and Germantown Campuses)
  • Recruit, interview, and onboard figure models in collaboration with HR Strategic Management and Talent Management.
  • Manage scheduling and monitor the program’s temporary staff budget.
  • Maintain accurate spending records and communicate budget updates as needed
