About The Position

Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking an Art-Drawing and 2D Design faculty member to fill a position beginning August 2026 in the Visual, Performing, and Media Arts (VPMA) area. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. Montgomery College is a public, fully accredited institution by both MSA/CHE and the National Accreditation of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and an open admission institution. The College is dedicated to student success and is widely recognized for the quality and scope of its academic programs across three campuses in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Visual, Performing, and Media Arts (VPMA) area has outstanding programs in the visual arts. In addition to exceptional educational experiences offered in the various art studios and classes, the Rockville Art Department also has extensive co-curricular offerings that include gallery exhibits, Artist-In-Residency program, Artwalk, artist talks, workshops, and an active student art club. Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions like The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Towson University, the University of Maryland, Howard University, and many more, both regional and beyond. We are seeking a Drawing and 2D Design full-time Faculty Member in the Art Department beginning August 2026, who is excited by this level of excellence and is committed to student success. Introduction to Drawing and Introduction to 2D Design are essential foundational courses that are required by all Studio Art and Media Arts majors, and are of critical importance to the College’s General Education program. The art faculty is engaged in projects at many of the celebrated institutions in the Washington D.C. region, including the Smithsonian museums, galleries, and art centers. This connection to the vibrant art scene in the region also allows opportunities to bring guest artists from the professional world onto our campuses and into our classrooms. The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work, and utilizing instructional technology. Montgomery College comprises three campuses with classes held during daytime, evenings, and weekends. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses. Teaching assignments may include various instructional modalities that may include distance learning.

Requirements

  • A Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art before the time of hire.
  • Experience teaching Drawing and/or 2-D Design at the College level (instructor of record acceptable).
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion through teaching or professional practice.
  • A record of professional creative and/or scholarly work.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 3 studio courses in Drawing and/or 2-D Design per semester.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts; evaluate and grade student exams, assignments, and papers.
  • Incorporate the use of an educational enterprise platform (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction, including inexpensive or no-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
  • Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend classes, and virtual courses. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Teach at any of the three physical campuses (TPSS, Rockville, and Germantown), or online through Distance Learning at Montgomery College.
  • Apply culturally relevant pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.
  • Engage students in their learning through active, collaborative learning approaches.
  • Understand and commit to student success, including increasing retention, transfer, and graduation, and creating an equitable and inclusive learning environment for diverse students.
  • Advise students in Art and General Studies HACL (Humanities, Arts, Communication and Languages) about program curriculum, transfer options, and professional/career opportunities.
  • Serve on, or lead, department, discipline, campus, and college committees, and take an active role in supporting Art department promotional initiatives.
  • Actively participate in the College’s General Education program.
  • Engage in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs and learning outcomes with the goal of increasing student success.
  • Commitment to work collegially and to support an influx of broad and distinct ideas that increase learning and strengthen the impact of our institution to collectively achieve a just experience for all.
  • Maintain an active program of professional development and participate in professional organizations and activities.
