About The Position

The Opportunity: The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is seeking a Nutrition Education Assistant to teach about nutrition for low-income audiences in various community locations. With training and supervision, this position delivers classes to adults and youth with limited resources, empowering them to make long-lasting healthy changes. This position is located within WSU Extension Pierce County, in Tacoma. Successful educators: are confident speaking in front of groups and engaging participants in class activities, possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively recruit and retain participants and collaborate with community agencies, have excellent time management and organization, and are self-driven to successfully work independently with minimal supervision. Duties include, but are not limited to: Planning and Preparation: plan recruitment events, prepare for events and classes (including grocery shopping and food prep) Teaching: communicate and interact appropriately with culturally diverse audiences, think critically and be adaptable to potential challenges that may arise Data & Reporting: detail-oriented data collection and entry, submit accurate and timely administrative reports Recruiting and Networking: identify, form, and maintain relationships with community agencies, encourage enrollment through health/resource fairs, group presentations, and printed materials Additional Information: This is a full time ( 100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime eligible. Monthly Salary: $3,495 to $ 4,653 | Range 39 Steps A - M | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28 . In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Requirements

  • Six months of full-time experience/training in the appropriate discipline; OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Experience working with food and nutrition in an educational setting.
  • Ability to work a flexible, yet structured schedule with occasional night and weekend shifts to meet the needs of program partners and grant requirements.
  • Must have the ability to travel within targeted counties, including overnight (for occasional trainings, paid for by WSU).
  • Reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed) year-round.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
  • Ability to obtain within 14 days of hire and maintain a current Washington State Food Workers Card.
  • Ability to organize materials for classes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience planning and delivering education to youth and adults in nutrition, family and consumer sciences, life skills, or a closely related field.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft office, Outlook, Zoom, data entry software, or willingness and ability to learn.
  • Ability to work well with other people and diverse program participants.
  • Ability to keep written or digital logs of activities and complete reports.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, or any other language.
