About The Position

The Inspector position is responsible for reviewing drawings and specifications for a variety of municipal infrastructure projects and conducting field inspections of civil construction sites to ensure compliance with approved plans, technical specifications, and contract documents. The role also verifies that materials used meet project specifications and confirms that contractors have properly notified residents of construction activities within affected areas. The inspector prepares and serves correction notices and may serve violation citations. This role involves performing record keeping activities to maintain filing systems, reports and documentation, and researching and evaluating plans, specifications and drawings. The position requires proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and Adobe, along with superb customer service experience via phone, in-person, and email. Great writing and critical thinking skills are essential for document analysis. The inspector must be able to review surveys, floor plans, site plans, Google Earth, GIS / mapping systems, and act as a problem solver. Various technical reports must also be prepared and submitted.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed
  • Two years of journey level experience related to the area of inspection to be performed
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and Adobe
  • Superb customer service experience via phone / in-person / Email
  • Great writing and critical thinking skills for documents Analysis
  • Able to review surveys, floor plans, site plans, Google Earth, GIS / mapping systems
  • A problem solver
  • Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP2-2)

Nice To Haves

  • Code Enforcement certificates/licenses preferred to be obtained within 11 months of employment in the area of inspection to be performed:
  • Plumbing - licensed by the State Board of Plumbing Examiners; and, ICBO or IAPMO Plumbing Inspector Certificate
  • Electrical - ICBO or IAEA Inspector's Certificate
  • Mechanical - ICBO Mechanical Inspector's Certificate
  • Structural - ICBO Building Inspector's Certificate
  • Occupancy - ICBO Certificate in the primary area of inspection to be performed
  • Elevator - QEI Elevator Inspector's Certificate
