Our Values: Integrity Common Sense Innovation Accountability Position Data: Inspector II-J23-U30-H Regular Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime) Overview: Pay Range: $31.19 - $39.55 per hour (CTP Pay Plan, B26 Step 1-13) Hiring Range: $31.19 - $33.10 per hour (CTP Pay Plan, B26 Step 1-4 DOQ) Job Closing Date: March 24, 2026 Weekly reviews starting March 3, 2026 There is one Inspector II opening with the Yakima County Public Services, Building and Fire Safety Division. This position performs building, accessibility, mechanical and plumbing field inspection, basic plan review, and investigations of structures for compliance with applicable federal, state, and county zoning, building, and fire regulations. There will be an International Codes IRC / IBC knowledge assessment as a part of the interview. Note: This position is within the Clerical, Technical and Professional Employees Group. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) AND seven (7) years of construction experience as a contractor, construction worker, superintendent, foreman, engineer, architect, construction plans designer or in a journey level trade; OR an Associate degree or two-year technical certificate in Construction, Construction Management, Building Code Technology, Engineering, or Architecture or any other building construction related industry AND five (5) years of applicable work experience is preferred.
  • valid WA State Driver’s License and proof of insurance, if requested
  • successful completion of a criminal background investigation and general employment of verification
  • ability to obtain Yakima County Sheriff’s Office deputation as Special Deputy with limited commission with 3 months of employment
  • ICC Certified: Residential Building Inspector or Commercial Building Inspector or Residential Plans Examiner or Building Plans Examiner required within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Field inspects, and approves building and environmental systems during construction or alteration of structures including residential, commercial, industrial, educational, and agricultural construction; reads and interprets complex drawings, blueprints, maps, manuals, and engineering documents to compare structures, procedures, and materials to the various state and local codes to ensure public safety; determines if construction materials and methods are in compliance with approved plans, building standards and codes and determines if corrections are required providing the customer a written and/or electronic correction notice for non-compliant items; Records inspections conducted and correction notices issued; prepares correspondence, documents, and detailed reports of inspections and investigations; and enters data into the computer.
  • Interprets and applies construction codes and advises property owners about code compliant methods of construction in order to satisfy the adopted building codes.
  • Ensures that the project is in compliance with conditions imposed by the adopted International Building Codes prior to final inspection approval of the project.
  • Monitors and evaluates special inspections for compliance with required submittals of reports, for adherence to specified standards and methods of special inspection, for any problems identified by special inspection; directs the resolution of any problems identified by special inspections, and validates that the special inspection function has been done in compliance with established regulations and practices.
  • Investigates violations of building, and other applicable regulations for which enforcement authority has been granted by their own initiative, by verifying whether site conditions or usages comply with County building, ordinances; determines if proper permits have been obtained; notifies property owners and/or contractors of violations, deficiencies and safety hazards, issues stop work orders for violation of building codes.
  • Other duties required.
  • Assist with Fire Life Safety Inspections as needed.
  • Organizes and presents community outreach programs to general public; develops, conducts, and evaluates departmental training for various county personnel; and develops and administers educational seminars to engineers, building designers, and construction contractors.
  • Attending International Code Council classes/seminars; ensuring proper vehicle maintenance; and purchasing essential equipment.
