The MBU Quality department is responsible for upholding the high-quality standards of the Thorlabs supply chain from within the Mechanics group. The Inspection Programmer Supervisor ensures programs are effective and exist on all automated metrology equipment for dimensional inspection of high precision mechanical components, in compliance with blueprint specifications, Thorlabs Manufacturing and ISO9001 Quality Standards. The programs should ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and quality required on first piece, in-process, and production sample lot inspections for components produced on CNC machinery and manual equipment. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Metrology, Precision Mechanical Inspection, and/or Quality production manufacturing environment.
  • High School or Trade School Diploma, Certification Training, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of automated inspection systems, i.e. CMM, Vision Systems.
  • Ability to operate a CMM and program Vision System equipment.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with various metrology tools, equipment, gauges, and inspection methods.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical blueprint specifications (metric/imperial) with a solid understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Ability to recognize critical features/tolerances, equipment capabilities/limitations, and the best method of inspection.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot problems.
  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of SolidWorks, MS Office and ERP software.
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task, and make educated quality decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • High attention to detail with excellent organization, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Prior management experience is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage performance, department goals, priorities, and responsibilities for the inspection programming team.
  • Provide inspection system programs to support high volume production and inspection of precision components.
  • Ensure programs are current and exist for all components manufactured by or for Thorlabs.
  • Ensure programs are designed for maximum inspection efficiency and utilize the most appropriate equipment.
  • Ensure inspection system fixtures are utilized and maximized, where possible, for pallet quantity inspections. Request and expedite new fixtures as necessary.
  • Maintain comprehensive log of existing/required inspection system programs, ballooned drawings/inspection worksheets, and inspection fixtures.
  • Provide ballooned inspection drawings and worksheets for all manufactured components.
  • Ensure best method of inspection and targeted critical features are clearly identified.
  • Coordinate worksheets with inspection system programs.
  • Assist intercompany personnel with product inspection needs and measurement training, as required.
  • Ensure all inspectors and users are trained in proper use and care of inspection systems.
  • Ensure all systems are maintained, calibrated, and cleaned.
  • Recommend additional resources, equipment, tooling, and fixtures, as required.
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, inspectors, and management.
  • Provide feedback and improvement opportunities on blueprints, designs, and manufacturing concerns.
  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
