About The Position

This position involves evaluating and treating patients who experience difficulties performing daily tasks due to physical, emotional, cognitive, and/or psychosocial conditions. The role requires providing coordinated and comprehensive patient care, including assessment, setting expected outcomes, implementing rehabilitation interventions, and evaluating progress within an interdisciplinary team. Key responsibilities include assessing patient needs, developing and executing individualized treatment programs to prevent and minimize physical disabilities and pain, and collaborating with nursing for safe patient handling. The therapist is also responsible for accurate documentation of treatments, submitting charges for services, overseeing Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), students, and volunteers, and participating in the education and training of staff, patients, and family members to ensure appropriate care delivery and support the mission of WVU Medicine. For facilities with specialty accreditation, annual required education related to accreditation standards must be completed.

Requirements

  • Current or temporary Occupational Therapist Licensure as required by the state where services will be performed: MD: Occupational Therapist License OR Occupational Therapist Temporary License through Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy Practice OH: Occupational Therapist through the Ohio Board of Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Training PA: Occupational Therapist License OR Occupational Therapist Temporary License through Pennsylvania Department of State WV: Occupational Therapist License OR Occupational Therapist Limited Permit through West Virginia Board of Occupational Therapy
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize time and tasks to achieve a well-coordinated work effort and to effectively meet work schedules including an ability to integrate multiple factors which may have an impact on patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides coordinated and comprehensive patient care including assessment, expected outcomes, rehabilitation interventions and evaluation within an interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Evaluates patient needs and develops and implements the treatment programs for assigned patients to identify, prevent, and to minimize physical disabilities and/or pain of patient.
  • As appropriate to setting, determines/revises priorities for direct/indirect patient care activities based on patient need and available resources; collaborates with nursing to update appropriate algorithms for safe patient handling.
  • Documents all treatments, according to department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision, by documentation review and consultation with referring Provider.
  • Submits accurate charges for services rendered for patients, according to departmental policies and procedures utilizing the billing system via the patient’s EMR.
  • Carries out oversight responsibilities to ensure supervision of COTAs, students and volunteers.
  • Participates in education and training of staff, students, patients, and family members to assure the appropriate delivery of care and to achieve the mission of WVU Medicine.
  • Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
