Department Adult Psychiatrists With over 700 employees, Behavioral Health Services (BHS) at Denver Health is a large and rapidly expanding department that provides psychiatric care for patients in community, emergency, inpatient, justice, medical, mobile, and outpatient settings. Job Summary Under minimal supervision provides psychiatric care as a nurse practitioner or a physicians' assistant. Examines and diagnoses patients and develops treatment plans. Performs testing, referral to physicians as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs administrative support functions as needed. Essential Functions: Patient Care • Monitors and evaluates the psychiatric condition of each patient and in collaboration with the psychiatrist and other disciplines and standards of care, or by applying appropriate protocols, makes decisions regarding treatment changes. Refers patient to specialized services as needed. Determines and assesses the mental health status of patients by reviewing records and obtaining comprehensive behavioral health histories. Gathers history from patient, providers, and family/significant others as needed. Analyzes assessment data in order to formulate a unique plan of care through identified needs. Relates assessment findings to multidisciplinary team as appropriate. Identifies and reports any abnormalities in assessment data. Performs best practices and maintains HIPAA compliance. Orders and prescribes appropriate medications in accordance with pharmaceutical guidelines and standards and within the limits of the appropriate statutory limitations or refers patient to a caregiver in a specialty area. Initiates, performs, or directs other health care professionals to perform screenings and diagnostic tests. • Orders initial and/or routine laboratory tests and follows up on results, orders additional tests or refers patient to appropriate provider. (50%) Administrative and Documentation • Completes required documentation legibly, thoroughly and in a timely manner. Documentation is complete, concise and reflects care given. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files and records. Participates in the clinical education of healthcare students and new staff. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, and attending in-service meetings and workshops. • Collaborates with other health care professionals in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for individuals, collaborates with Risk Management to resolve identified and potential problems and ensures proper reporting of events as dictated by policy. Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications. Adheres to, complies with and demonstrates support for the mission and values of Denver Health. Ensures confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient’s care. • Has regular and predictable attendance. • Ensures all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to whom care/service is being provided.
