The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician role offers a progressive career path from Trainee to State Licensed to Nationally Certified. Key responsibilities include reviewing and processing medication orders, preparing and distributing medications to patient care units, and managing medication inventory by stocking, checking expiration dates, and processing returns. The position also involves performing billing and other pharmacy duties that do not require a pharmacist, maintaining appropriate records and regulatory documentation, and pre-packaging bulk medications. Technicians are responsible for answering telephones, directing calls appropriately, and diverting all medication/clinical inquiries to a Pharmacist. Maintaining department cleanliness and adhering to established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and Infection Control standards are also crucial. The role requires participation in educational programs, in-services, and meetings, and consistently providing service excellence. Specific duties evolve with career progression: Trainees are responsible for the issuance and delivery of non-controlled medications and processing sales. State Licensed Technicians order medications from various suppliers, prepare parenteral products, train new support personnel, and handle the issuance and delivery of controlled medications. Nationally Certified Technicians obtain patient medication orders for reconciliation and prepare chemotherapy, including dosage calculation checks.
