This role involves reviewing and processing departmental order requests, preparing and distributing medications to patient care units, and maintaining medication inventory including stocking, checking expiration dates, and processing returns. The position also includes billing and other pharmacy duties that do not require a pharmacist, maintaining records and regulatory documentation, pre-packaging and labeling bulk medications, and handling telephone inquiries by directing calls appropriately and diverting clinical questions to a Pharmacist. The technician is responsible for maintaining department cleanliness and adhering to established policies, procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and Infection Control standards. The role also requires participation in educational programs and meetings, and providing service excellence. Specific duties vary by level: Trainees issue and deliver non-controlled medications and process sales; State Licensed Technicians order medications, prepare parenteral products, train new personnel, and issue Schedule II-V medications; Nationally Certified Technicians obtain patient medication orders for reconciliation and prepare chemotherapy with dosage calculation checks. The position offers a clear progression path from Trainee to State Licensed to Nationally Certified.
