About The Position

The Rehab Coder accurately reviews patient medical records to assign specific ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG, and IRF-PAI codes for diagnoses and procedures, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, regulations (like HIPAA), and billing requirements for inpatient rehabilitation stays, often working remotely and collaborating with clinical staff for documentation clarity. Key tasks involve abstracting data, maintaining high coding accuracy, staying current with coding changes, and supporting quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Formal ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG, and IRF-PAI training
  • Minimum of three years coding for in inpatient rehabilitation facility with knowledge of IRF-PAI.
  • 4 years of experience with coding inpatient hospital medical records required.
  • One of the following required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

Responsibilities

  • Code Assignment: Review medical charts to assign accurate ICD-10-CM (diagnoses), ICD-10-PCS (procedures), DRG, and IRF-PAI (Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patient Assessment Instrument) codes for inpatient rehab cases.
  • Documentation Review: Analyze patient records for completeness and ensure documentation supports the assigned codes.
  • Data Abstraction: Abstract essential clinical and demographic data into hospital billing systems and other databases.
  • Compliance: Adhere to coding guidelines (AHIMA, CMS), regulations (HIPAA), and facility-specific policies.
  • Collaboration: Communicate with physicians and clinical staff to clarify documentation for accurate coding.
  • Quality & Productivity: Maintain high accuracy (e.g., 95%+) and meet established productivity benchmarks.
  • Education: Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on coding changes and regulations.
