About The Position

The Inpatient Coder Level 3 is a senior-level position responsible for coding high-complexity inpatient records with accuracy and efficiency. This role requires expert-level knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems, MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment, and comprehensive understanding of clinical documentation. The Level 3 coder ensures coding compliance, supports training and mentoring of junior staff, and contributes to audit and quality improvement efforts within the HIM department.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in HIT or related field
  • 5+ years of inpatient coding experience
  • CIC Certification

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficient understanding of complex clinical scenarios, including comorbidities and complications.
  • Analyze detailed clinical documentation to identify relevant clinical indicators ensuring coding accuracy.
  • Perform and respond to physician documentation queries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and perform basic auditing to maintain compliance.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills in coding and documentation review.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians and healthcare teams to clarify documentation.
  • Work independently while meeting and maintaining established productivity and accuracy standards.
  • Assist in mentoring Level I coders or onboarding new team members as needed.
