About The Position

The Infection Control Practitioner I conducts infection surveillance and educates all staff levels within the organization with respect to infection control. They participate in program development designed to address local and national trends, and recommendations of organizations such as the Joint Commission and the Centers for Disease Control. They collect, measure, and analyze data and pertinent research in the areas of infection control. The Infection Control Practitioner I develops policy, procedure, presentations, and articles for internal and external publication. They consult on issues related to emergency management and construction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Medical Technology, Epidemiology or Public Health
  • 1-2 years of previous job-related experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years in Infection Control and 3-5 years in field of clinical specialty.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years preferred.
  • Certified Infection Control (CIC) and current Registered Nurse License in the State of Illinois preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveillance of microbiology data with analysis of blood stream infections, surgical site infections, ventilator-associated pneumonias and multi-drug- resistant organisms, feedback of data to medical directors and administrators.
  • Remain current in pertinent literature and infection control practice.
  • Direct and monitor Joint Commission survey preparation related to Infection Control.
  • Develop infection control programs such as hand hygiene and implement these programs throughout the health system.
  • Educate Clinical and non-clinical staff regarding infection control practices.
  • Report pertinent infection control data to public health departments.
  • Participate on health system committees to represent infection control practice. Committees include Environmental Health, National Patient Safety Goal Liaisons, Construction, Patient Safety, Joint Commission Leadership, Patient Care Policy and Procedure, Clinical Products, and Emergency Management.
  • Round on units and in outpatient clinics regularly to insure compliance with infection control practices; participate on unit-based QI committees.
  • Review and revise infection control policies at least annually; develop infection control and performance improvement policies related to Emergency Management and participate in mandatory exercises.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate follow up of exposures to patients, families, and physicians; partner with Occupational Health on infection control concerns.
  • Consult with all departments and programs within the health system on issues and concerns related to infection control and prevention.
  • Develop articles and presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Facilitate monthly Infection Control meetings.
