The Infection Control Nurse is responsible for planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, coordinating, and directing the facility's infection control program in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines. This includes ensuring compliance with CDC, OSHA, and local regulations, developing and updating infection control precautions, and interpreting policies. The role involves maintaining a reference library of infection control materials, making reports and recommendations to the Administrator, and assisting departments in identifying tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids. The nurse will monitor infection control practices, conduct rounds to nursing units, visit isolated residents, and ensure laboratory support is available. Key duties also include reviewing and analyzing infectious disease laboratory reports, assisting with decontamination and sterilization activities, and preparing monthly summaries of resident/personnel infections. The position requires participation in facility surveys, assisting with discharge planning for isolated residents, and developing a facility-wide TB management control program. The Infection Control Nurse serves on and attends Infection Control Committee meetings, assists in evaluating and revising practices, and provides reports on nosocomial infections. Personnel functions include developing systems for detecting and reporting employee infections, assisting with employee health services, providing counseling, and orienting new employees to infection control policies. The role also encompasses nursing care and consultation, such as participating in resident admission, ensuring nursing staff follow isolation precautions, interviewing residents/families, making rounds with physicians, and monitoring medication passes. Staff development involves creating orientation and in-service training programs for infection control, hazard communication, TB management, and bloodborne pathogens. Equipment and safety responsibilities include recommending supply needs, maintaining stock levels, assisting with preventive maintenance, and developing waste disposal procedures. The nurse will also assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining written care plans for residents in isolation, ensuring personnel awareness, and reviewing/revising care plans quarterly. Budget and planning functions involve assisting the Director of Nursing Services with budget preparation and recommending equipment/supply needs. The role also includes assessing new resident care products, providing confidential counseling for HBV and TB exposure, and maintaining exposure reports.
