About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health is seeking a dedicated Industrial Hygiene Consultant to support our statewide Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint programs. This role is essential in reducing exposure to hazardous materials and ensuring compliance with federal and state safety regulations. In this vital role, you’ll consult with government agencies, contractors, building owners, and the public to reduce asbestos and lead exposure in schools, homes, and commercial buildings. You’ll conduct educational outreach, site visits, respond to technical inquiries, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations—directly contributing to the health and safety of North Carolina communities. Your work will help prevent environmental contamination and safeguard vulnerable populations, especially children. Requirements

  • Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety & health, biology, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene inspections: or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience consulting/advising contractors, property owners and the general public regarding asbestos and lead- based paint requirements, referencing state and federal regulations.
  • Experience and extensive knowledge in industrial hygiene practices, including sampling techniques, work practice standards, interpreting regulations and guidelines and knowledge of occupational and environmental controls.
  • Experience providing presentations to various group sizes with varying technical backgrounds on multiple subjects.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to write accurate technical responses in either a letter or report format to convey technical information to non-technical individuals in a meaningful manner.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively, and to reprioritize in order to address an emergency which can include traveling on short (1) day’s notice.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and enter confined spaces.
