Technical skills and tasks Surface preparation: abrasive blasting, power-tool cleaning, sanding, solvent cleaning, grinding. Mixing and applying coatings by spray (airless/air), brush, and roller. Knowledge of coating specifications, mil thickness, wet-film/dry-film thickness measuring. Ability to read and follow work orders, blueprints, and specification sheets. Perform masking, masking removal, touch-ups, and final inspection. Use and maintain spray equipment, compressors, blasting cabinets, and hand tools. Safety, compliance, and quality Strong knowledge of PPE use (respirators, gloves, coveralls, eye/face protection) and safe handling of paints, thinners, and solvents. Familiar with MSDS/SDS, hazardous materials labeling, and waste disposal procedures. Knowledge of shop safety rules, confined-space awareness, and fall protection as applicable. Ability to follow SSPC/AMPP or project-specific coating procedures and quality standards. Basic familiarity with air monitoring, ventilation, and fire prevention in painting areas. Physical demands and work conditions Able to stand, bend, kneel, climb ladders/scaffolds, and lift 50+ lbs. Comfortable working in enclosed booths, outdoors, or at heights; exposure to fumes, dust, and noise. Able to work shifts and overtime as needed to meet production schedules. Soft skills Attention to detail and strong visual quality standards. Good communication and ability to work on a team. Time management and ability to meet deadlines. Optional/advanced skills (added value) Experience with powder coating, catalytic coatings, or specialty marine/industrial coatings. Ability to perform simple coating inspections and document results. Basic welding/metal-repair skills for touch-up prior to coating.
