Individual Placement - Volunteer Program Member
About The Position
The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie volunteer program began in the early 2000’s with just a few dedicated volunteers and has since multiplied to several hundred individuals who contribute thousands of hours annually. Midewin volunteers support the following projects - habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, education, and cultural heritage. The Volunteer Program Member will assist with the day-to-day tasks of volunteer management as well as plan and implement volunteer recruitment and recognition for 2026. The member will also coordinate with Midewin staff to schedule volunteer workdays, plan special events, and manage volunteer requests from partners and community organizations. The goals of this position are to increase awareness of the Midewin Volunteer Program, recruit new volunteers, and maintain a strong and professional volunteer culture for the 2026 field season.
Requirements
- High School Diploma
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Upon selection, must complete Forest Service background check and training for computer access
- Upon selection, must complete training for Forest Service government drivers license
- Experience with public engagement.
Nice To Haves
- Experience and comfortability in working independently and in a group setting.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications like Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Good communication skills, including oral and written.
- Comfortability in both an office work environment and a field work environment.
Responsibilities
- Volunteer Recruitment – Attend volunteer fairs and events, create handouts and flyers for the Welcome Center and Trailhead boards, create volunteer content for the Midewin website and social media, outreach to specific community groups.
- Volunteer Recognition – Manage and distribute years of service awards, assist with Forest Service award nominations, create content for media and articles, visit/meet volunteers during workdays, plan and execute volunteer recognition event.
- Volunteer Management – Assist Volunteer Coordinator in updating information in online volunteer database and coordinating projects and needs with Midewin staff. Manage registration for large volunteer events, gather volunteer info for reporting.
