About The Position

General Statement of Duties: Develops, implements, and evaluates plans to support community members with disabilities for inclusive involvement in recreation programs. Prepares and works a sensory booth at designated events as assigned. Does job-related work as required. Distinguishing Features of The Class: An employee in this classification is responsible for planning and implementing reasonable accommodation plans for community members with disabilities. This position assists community members with disabilities to support access to facilities and programs. Work requires general understanding of the social construct of disability, the ability to guide sensitive conversations, and flexibility. Work is performed under the supervision of the Community Services Supervisor. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this position; however, the position includes responsibility for scheduling, educating, training and observing staff performance, providing input to their immediate supervisor, and providing support to volunteers.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and how these principles function in an organization and influence operations.
  • Knowledge of leisure, social, health and legal needs of individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Title II of the ADA, ADA transition plans, self-evaluation, the concepts and practices to integrate recreation programs for the disabled community; training in behavior management, positive behavioral support as well as age-appropriate development.
  • Knowledge of record keeping.
  • Proficient technological skills including ASANA, MS Office, Google Suite, database management and the ability to learn new technology.
  • Project management.
  • Ability to work with people of all backgrounds and populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with accountability; effectively train and present.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, community members and partners, to support individuals from marginalized populations across the district.
  • One to two years previous experience working in a setting with people with disabilities or customer service interacting regularly with community members with disabilities, or a related associate's degree in disability studies, therapeutic recreation, sociology, planning, public policy and management, family and human services, or a related area.
  • Or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain current Basic First Aid and CPR and AED certification; possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon's driver's license.
  • Because this job is considered safety sensitive, a drug screen test will be required prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in disability studies, therapeutic recreation, sociology, planning, public policy and management, family and human services, or a related area.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
  • Previous experience working with persons with disabilities.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with staff, parents, and other stakeholders to develop strategies, interventions, and individualized plans that ensure equal access to facilities and programming.
  • Assess for risks and unsafe conditions.
  • Complete community member evaluation, assessment and individualized support plan (ISP) once accommodations have been requested by family or community member.
  • Maintain appropriate records and prepare reports related to inclusion support services.
  • Assist the Community Services Supervisor in conversations that help promote understanding, respect, accommodations, belonging, and inclusion for people in marginalized communities.
  • Act as a mandatory reporter and maintain confidentiality.
  • Conduct special projects or perform other job duties as assigned by the Community Services Supervisor.
