About The Position

The Hydronics Operations Engineer supports the reliable and efficient operation of Penn State’s chilled water and heating hot water systems, including campus distribution loops, plant equipment, and building-level hydronic systems. The engineer applies established hydronic and hydraulic principles to evaluate system performance, troubleshoot operational issues, and improve the long-term reliability and efficiency of the utility and building mechanical systems. The role supports Penn State’s long-range initiative to expand interconnected chilled and hot water loops across University Park. This position develops and maintains preventative maintenance programs for chilled water and hot water assets; assists in planning and documenting system upgrades; and prepares technical reports and recommendations to support University decision-making related to hydronic distribution capacity, system reliability, equipment renewal, and operational strategies. The engineer supports Penn State’s water treatment program by collaborating with water analysts and the University’s water treatment service provider to ensure hydronic systems are properly operated and maintained. The engineer works with campus operations teams, design professionals, consultants, and equipment manufacturers to solve hydronic problems, optimize system performance, review construction documents, and ensure that chilled water and heating hot water systems are designed and operated for long-term efficiency and maintainability. The position requires an understanding of building-level mechanical systems such as pumps, heat exchangers, piping systems, air handling units, cooling/heating coils, fan coil units, and other terminal heating and cooling equipment. The Hydronics Operations Engineer provides technical support, documentation, training, and presentations to operations and maintenance personnel, helping to ensure consistent system performance across the campus utility and building portfolio. The engineer works closely with the University’s technicians, leveraging their knowledge and input in making decisions and planning.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects related to chilled water and hot water distribution systems, including feasibility studies, hydraulic evaluations, system assessments, and budget development.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and calculations for chilled water, heating, hot water, pumping systems, heat exchangers, and associated building mechanical equipment.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for hydronic assets (e.g., pumps, valves, strainers, piping, plate‑and-frame heat exchangers, coils, and building-level chilled/heating water equipment).
  • Support and lead planning efforts for future chilled water and hot water loop expansions, conversions, and the development of district hot water plants.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hydronic issues in both utility and building systems, including flow, pressure, and heat transfer problems.
  • Conduct field verifications, collect performance data, and assist in developing system documentation, operation strategies, and maintenance standards.
  • Provide technical support for stand-alone chillers, building heating hot water systems, air handling units, and hydronic control strategies.
  • Collaborate with campus units to ensure chilled water and hot water infrastructure supports long-term planning, capital renewal, and University objectives.
  • Provide training, workshops, and technical resources for operations and maintenance staff.
  • Utilize and maintain a campus chilled water and hot water model.
  • Review scheduled maintenance plans and assist with corrective maintenance repairs.
  • Work closely with operating technicians to optimize control system performance and function.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance technicians and staff to identify, plan, and prioritize projects for rebuilding or replacing systems and equipment.
  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
