About The Position

Pay rate of $19.941 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $22.938 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills. In this classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential of: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service. Requirements

  • Hwy Construction Technician I: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
  • Hwy Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections.
  • OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment.
  • Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have good math skills.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 60 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department.
  • This position may require overnight travel.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
  • In order to be hired at the Hwy Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses.
  • Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material.
  • This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Hwy Construction Tech II level.
  • Typically, this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing: read and interpret plans and specifications; perform mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and/or operating equipment, computers and associated software.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances, and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes.
  • Must be able to obtain material testing certification, such as ACI.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, strong math skills, and be able to multitask.
  • Ability to work and communicate with a team.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, be self-motivated, and hold high integrity.
  • Trainable.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and adjusting to new technology and processes.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent with good math and computer skills.
  • Post High School training in survey or construction desirable.
  • Material testing certification, such as ACI, or traffic control training from ATTSA.

Responsibilities

  • Performs standard tests on Portland cement concrete, asphaltic concrete, soil, aggregate, and other construction material for conformance to specifications, and maintains automated records.
  • Performs tests such as slump tests, entrained air content, and unit weight tests of Portland cement concrete.
  • Performs soil tests using light weight deflectometer to measure deflection and moisture.
  • Uses balloon volume measures, scales, and heating devices to calculate the density and moisture content of soil.
  • Inspects contractors' work on construction projects including checking grades and elevations, collecting recording measurements, and maintaining automated records.
  • Observes transportable and stationary scales to weigh contractors' trucks containing materials used in highway construction such as concrete, hay for mulch, asphalt, and gravel.
  • Inspects earthwork and removal operations.
  • Reads construction plans to understand dimensions and information shown and applies the information to the inspection of projects.
  • Participates on a highway construction survey crew responsible to utilize construction plans, blue top data, and cross section data to stake locations at highway construction sites.
  • Measures elevations using a survey rod and level, measures distances using a chain, tape measure, or electronic measuring equipment.
  • Makes standard computations, operates total station, GPS, and/or level.
  • Acts as survey crew leader on less complex surveys or fills in for crew leader.
  • Assists Maintenance forces with Emergency and Winter Operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
