About The Position

Facilities Management's Health System Physical Plant at the University of Virginia has an exciting opportunity for an HVAC Professional, which supports Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost-effective, reliable HVAC and maintenance to the University community. The position will be filled either as an HVAC Mechanic or Senior HVAC Mechanic level depending on the credentials and experience of the finalist selected. HVAC Mechanics perform journey level installation, repair, and maintenance on a variety of package and central heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Other duties include preventive maintenance; servicing, overhauling, and maintaining a variety of large central units; and determining equipment needs. HVAC Mechanics receives job assignments from a supervisor, however most work is performed with little supervision. Senior HVAC Mechanics must be familiar with current mechanical codes and industry best practices, plan and carry out work in a safe and productive manner, make decisions independently, and occasionally organize others to perform complex tasks. A Senior level mechanic contributes to team success through respectful personal conduct, sharing knowledge with coworkers and trainees, building, and sustaining positive customer relations, and innovating to improve work practices. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four [4] years of experience in the HVAC trade.
  • Journeyman or higher HVAC license
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Seven [7] years of experience in the HVAC trade.
  • Journeyman or higher HVAC license
  • Valid Driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform HVAC installation and repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Specify, estimate, and install equipment, refrigeration, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.
  • Respond to emergency requests.
  • Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
  • Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code.
  • Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Train and oversee Assistant and Apprentice work.
  • Perform preventative maintenance service, repairs, and component replacements on industrial, commercial, light-commercial, and residential HVAC systems.
  • Visually inspect and digitally monitor/adjust HVAC systems using both JCI and ALC platforms.
  • Provide constructive feedback on assigned tasks to improve effectiveness and customer value.
  • Using computerized maintenance management software, accurately enter time and materials used on jobs and provide useful descriptions of conditions found and steps taken.
  • On tasks requiring multiple workers, guide the activities of HVAC Mechanics and Assistants.
  • Provide training and encouragement of apprentices.
  • Participate fully in FM responses to major events or emergencies, including clearing of sidewalks and steps following snow storms.
