Purpose and Scope: A Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Mechanic inspects, adjusts, repairs and maintains equipment to preserve constant and dependable indoor air comfort and critical or laboratory environments. Essential Responsibilities: 1) Understand completely the operation of, and be proficient in, the repair of direct expansion and chilled water-based cooling systems. 2) Understand the operation of, and be proficient in the repair of, complex centrifugal chillers. 3) Employ test equipment including electrical multi-meters, air and water flow meters, and temperature and pressure sensors to diagnose environmental control system malfunction. 4) Be formally certified to handle, procure, introduce, and recover CFC, HFC, and HCFC refrigerants. 5) Specialize in the operation and maintenance of pneumatic and electronic direct digital control systems. This includes the ability to operate and program computerized hand-held service tools in the test, commissioning and repair of electronic programmable controllers. 6) Understand completely the operation of, and is proficient in, the repair of large air handlers. This includes the capability to test and balance large air distribution systems. 7) Pass pre-employment drug screen and demonstrate the ability to frequently lift loads in excess of 50 lbs. 8) Be prepared to work shift work, including weekends and overtime when required. 9) Possess a valid driver's license. Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
