About The Position

The Human Resources Intern performs entry-level professional and administrative human resources work in support of the Human Resources Department. This position provides practical experience in public sector human resources, including recruitment and selection, onboarding, records management, training support, HRIS data entry, employee engagement initiatives, and general HR administration. The Intern works under close supervision and receives structured guidance while gaining exposure to employment law, public sector HR practices, civil service processes, and county policies and procedures. This internship is unpaid.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of human resources principles and practices.
  • Interest in public-sector human resources and local government operations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to learn HRIS systems and other department software.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the internship.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited degree program in Human Resources, Business Administration/Management, Public Administration, Organizational Leadership, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Labor Relations, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with County staff and the public.
  • Ability to prepare professional written correspondence and reports.
  • Must be proficient in workplace English and spelling.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and work with numerical data for reporting and analysis purposes.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated instructions.
  • Ability to maintain discretion regarding business-related files, reports, and conversations within the provisions of open records law and other applicable State and Federal statutes and regulations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment appropriate to the level of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with recruitment processes including updating and formatting job descriptions, reviewing applications, and screening interview questions.
  • Assists with onboarding activities including preparation of new hire paperwork and orientation materials.
  • Maintains and updates employee records in compliance with County policy and record retention requirements.
  • Enters and audits data within the Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
  • Assists with compensation and classification research, including gathering market data.
  • Provides support for employee training and development initiatives.
  • Assists with wellness, engagement, and recognition programs.
  • Conducts basic research related to employment laws, HR best practices, and public-sector compliance requirements.
  • Assists with preparation of reports, spreadsheets, and internal communications.
  • Provides general administrative support to the Human Resources Department.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive employee and organizational information.
  • Assists with reviewing performance evaluations and assisting managers with related employee communications.
  • Assists with file management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
