About The Position

Apple is currently seeking an enthusiastic team player to join a dynamic and collaborative group as an Anthropometry Engineer focused on anthropometry and 3D data capture and exploration. You’ll have the unique opportunity to contribute to the development and continuing improvement of Apple hardware products by designing mechanical rigs and implementing scanning protocols from a human interaction perspective. The role requires working at the intersection of many disciplines, on a variety of projects and with multiple partners. Curiosity to delve into new domains, the ability to learn from technical and non-technical cross-functional partners, and excellent communication are key. Ideal candidates are are technical and skilled at setting up, operating, collecting, and analyzing outputs of quantitative data capture systems, such as motion capture. They intuitively think through anthropometric and anatomical considerations as they pertain to human-product interactions. DESCRIPTION In this role you will support Human Factor Engineers and Simulation Engineers providing them with data and creative solutions that help drive product development. You will work directly with teams around the company to conduct human-centered research and create actionable insights to inform product decisions.

Requirements

  • MS + 3 years of experience or PhD in an analytical field such as (but not limited to) Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Design, Physics (classical mechanics, thermodynamics), Metrology, Human Factors Engineering
  • Experience with designing user-studies that leverage motion capture, photogrammetry, laser scanning, force/pressure transducers and other electro-mechanical sensors or systems
  • Strong programming skills in a scripting language (Python, R, Matlab, etc), experience processing and analyzing human-body derived scans/meshes (e.g. photogrammetry, CT, MRI)
  • 3+ years of experience using CAD and basic lab tools to enable design and fabrication of test fixtures and measurement systems

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degrees are valued but applicable hands-on experience is still required
  • Familiarity with medical/comfort/fit/biomechanics/ergonomics research for informing commercial products
  • Experience prototyping 3D models for testing and validation
  • Experience using statistics to identify trends and anomalies in multivariate and/or medium- to large-scale datasets

Responsibilities

  • Developing instrumentation to capture human movement and product interaction
  • Conducting manual and automated 3D data capture for user-centered research and evaluation
  • Process, clean, and verify the integrity of 3D data.
  • Investigate new 3D data sources that can extend and improve insights
  • Establishing trust-based relationships with design, engineering, and product development groups and applying expertise to help teams quickly identify the best design path
