About The Position

Culinary Institute of America (CIA) adjunct faculty members play a critical role in delivering quality education to students, fostering a positive learning environment, and maintaining high academic standards. The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to, teaching and evaluating students. Exploring the Hudson Valley Food Systems (MSFS-501B) 1 credit This course offers an in-person, hands-on exploration of the food system of the Hudson Valley. Students will evaluate the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of farms and food businesses, while also visiting several non-profit organizations working to improve the food system in the region. One full day will be spent at the Menus of Change Summit, and participants will become familiar with Menus of Change principles and initiatives through discussion and reading. Students will also present proposals for their final project in the Sustainable Food Systems MPS Program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Advanced degree or minimum five (5) years experience in area of specialization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in subject matter specialization.
  • Demonstrated leadership in field of expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach or share expertise with others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively work with multiple teams across the organization.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive student issues with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills required.
  • Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with MS Office suite products, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Moderate to strong organizational skills, detail oriented and thorough.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment and maintain collaborative relationships with all members of faculty and administration.
  • Must have an excellent and welcoming presence in front of guests and employees.
  • Moderate to strong presentation skills are required.
  • Must be available to work the assigned course schedule.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends as required due to business needs.
  • Regular work requires a great deal of sitting and standing for extended periods.
  • Regular work requires the use of a computer, sometimes in excess of eight (8) hours per day

Nice To Haves

  • Masters Degree or Advanced Degree in area of specialization.
  • PhD in area specialization.
  • Graduate or undergraduate college level teaching experience.
  • Online teaching experience.
  • Experience with Moodle or similar online education software.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare course syllabi, curriculum and lesson plans for classes and teach classes as requested and scheduled, primarily online, in a manner consistent with the philosophy, policies, and guidelines of the Institute, and on a schedule shared in advance by the School.
  • Work in partnership and collaborate with the Instructional Design team to ensure the course meets the standards of the program.
  • Compile and present instructional material in accordance with graduate level standards and the College Catalog descriptions, course syllabi and outlines and class schedules as assigned. Course materials include but are not limited to: video content lectures, course announcements, readings, audio clips, etc.
  • Ensure course materials are current, relevant, and up to date.
  • Provide regular and constructive feedback to students in an objective, consistent, and timely manner; evaluate and document student performance using established methods and criteria.
  • File course grades promptly within the specific timeframe allowed.
  • Maintain record of student attendance, student progress, and grade distributions.
  • Hold weekly office hours.
  • Participate in the faculty online orientation/training process (“Faculty Primer”).
  • Attend online School of Graduate Studies (SGS) or CIA faculty meetings as requested.
  • Work individually with students who may need extra help, who have questions about course information, or who need assistance in their studies.
  • Communicate through appropriate channels.
  • Enforce attendance policies, Institute’s Professionalism, and other academic policies.
  • Complete mandatory online compliance trainings.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
