About The Position

The HSES Specialist will support the Occupational Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental programs at Kuraray America's La Porte and Bayport sites. This role ensures compliance with legal requirements and company guidelines while driving continuous improvement in HSES practices. The specialist will conduct monitoring, auditing, and sampling activities to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Safety, Environmental Science, or a related technical discipline with three years of experience in Occupational Health, Safety, and/or Environmental Sciences within a chemical or polymer manufacturing environment OR Associate's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Safety, Environmental Science, or a related technical discipline with five years of experience in Occupational Health, Safety, and/or Environmental Sciences within a chemical or polymer manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and occupational health standards, including those of ACGIH.
  • Strong documentation, reporting, and training skills.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate safety risks while ensuring adherence to regulatory standards .
  • Experience conducting audits and developing compliance strategies.
  • Proven ability to manage and influence teams without direct authority.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present information effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive results and achieve compliance goals.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, presentation, interpersonal, creative thinking, consulting, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work to manage multiple projects to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving/decision-making skills.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Candidates must have a valid driver's license.
  • Physically capable of: Standing for extended periods (4 hours), climbing stairs/ladders (4 flights), climbing up 50 feet or more, and lifting up to 50 lbs. or less
  • Frequent physical activity including bending, stooping, crouching, twisting, crawling, kneeling, squatting, and climbing

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update site safety procedures, ensuring effective communication and adherence by all personnel.
  • Conduct regular training sessions and compliance audits.
  • Maintain a strong field presence, auditing Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures, permits (hot/cold work, confined space), and operational tasks.
  • Regularly review and update safety documentation.
  • Conduct personnel exposure monitoring to support the chemical air monitoring program.
  • Serve as the backup Radiation Safety Officer, managing safety protocols and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Oversee the respirator protection program, ensuring personnel receive proper training and equipment.
  • Conduct noise surveys and dosimeter sampling, analyzing data and implementing protective measures.
  • Develop and lead monthly safety meetings, providing updates, addressing concerns, and promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct ventilation assessments to ensure proper functioning of air quality systems.
  • Perform regular security inspections and audits, identifying vulnerabilities and implementing corrective actions.
  • Participate in incident investigations, Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Investigate incidents, provide expert advice, and ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.
  • Conduct HSES audits, report findings, and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively.
  • Gather and analyze data using preset tools to support business insights and compliance reporting.
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with reporting standards.
  • Oversee the corrective action process to address safety concerns and regulatory requirements.
