About The Position

The HR User Experience (UX) & Communications Intern role at Ocean State Job Lot (“OSJL” and “Company”) is a paid, full-time, temporary position designed to help students develop a broad knowledge of the Company and build the OSJL brand. Specifically, the role will spearhead a mission-critical project focused on HR Systems User Experience & Content Optimization. The primary goal is to configure, curate, and test internal platforms to improve information accessibility and process efficiency for associates. Unlike a traditional HR role, this internship functions like a Product Design position within a People Operations Development department. This role will be the primary architect of our 'Digital HR Front Door,' transforming a generic landing page into a customized, branded experience for 5,000+ associates.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program is required, with strong academic credentials.
  • Experience with Web Content Management (e.g., Squarespace, Wix) and software configuration (e.g., permissions, Zapier, Airtable), with the ability to apply basic design principles (branding, image sizing) to digital platforms.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to audit content for accuracy and act as a beta tester to validate links and functionality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Google platforms, with the ability to maintain focus on independent research and development projects.
  • Ability to work a full-time schedule.
  • Must have reliable transportation to attend program educational experiences at different Company locations.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze company resources to determine information hierarchy, deciding which content warrants "Prime Real Estate" versus menu placement to effectively guide user attention.
  • Apply "If/Then" logic to system settings, ensuring permissions and content visibility are correctly configured based on user roles (e.g., Store Leader vs. Associate).
  • Evaluate the "User Journey" to reorganize pages and workflows, ensuring frequent tasks require the fewest clicks possible.
  • Apply OSJL Style Guide standards (logos, hex codes) to digital platforms to ensure a professional, consistent brand appearance.
  • Act as a beta tester to validate all system functionality, links, and buttons before public launch.
  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation to OSJL executive leadership and ownership at the conclusion of the program, summarizing key projects, insights, and achievements.
  • Participate in weekly educational programming and development workshops designed to enhance professional skills and industry knowledge.
  • Attend in-person and virtual events to build relationships across the Company.
  • Shadow associates to gain an understanding of department roles and assist with projects in furtherance of department objectives.
  • Acquire an understanding of the business environment, conduct, compliance, and ethics of a retail organization.
