About The Position

The HR Generalist supports all human resources functions within a fast-paced scrap metal and recycling operation. This role works closely with yard employees, drivers, equipment operators, and office staff to ensure compliance, safety alignment, workforce stability, and a strong employee culture. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in both office and industrial environments and understands the unique challenges of a labor-intensive industry.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2–5 years of HR experience, preferably in manufacturing, recycling, logistics, or industrial environments.
  • Working knowledge of labor laws, OSHA standards, and DOT regulations (preferred).
  • Experience supporting hourly, high-turnover, or multi-shift workforces.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both field and office employees.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP).
  • Experience in scrap metal, recycling, construction, or similar heavy industry.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with HRIS and timekeeping systems used in industrial environments.

Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle recruiting for positions such as CDL drivers, heavy equipment operators, welders, laborers, and administrative staff.
  • Partner with yard managers to understand staffing needs and reduce turnover in high-demand roles.
  • Coordinate pre-employment requirements including background checks, drug screens, and DOT compliance (if applicable).
  • Facilitate onboarding for new hires, including safety orientation, company policies, and job-specific training.
  • Ensure employees complete required certifications (OSHA, safety training, equipment operation, etc.).
  • Track and maintain training records for compliance and audit readiness.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for HR-related inquiries.
  • Support managers and employees in resolving workplace issues.
  • Promote a positive and safety-focused workplace culture.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, as well as OSHA and DOT regulations.
  • Partner with operations to support safety initiatives, incident reporting, and workers’ compensation processes.
  • Assist in audits, reporting, and policy updates.
  • Administer employee benefits programs including health, retirement, leave, and wellness initiatives.
  • Partner with payroll to ensure accurate and timely processing.
  • Support open enrollment and employee benefit education.
  • Assist in performance review cycles, employee training, and development programs.
  • Track turnover, absenteeism, and other workforce metrics common in industrial settings.
  • Help implement retention strategies for skilled labor positions.
