About The Position

This position involves inpatient teaching, supervision and assessment of resident physician and medical students in our community hospital care systems. It is expected the successful candidate will become actively involved in resident physician quality improvement projects. The position requires both night and weekend call coverage for the teaching services.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree or foreign degree equivalent

The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care on the inpatients services at our community hospitals.
  • Act as supervising attending physician, according to schedule developed in consultation with Directors of Internal Medicine Education (DIMEs) and the Department Chair, accepting responsibilities for the care of patients admitted to the University’s teaching service and available to discuss consults/referrals with the resident physicians assigned to teaching service.
  • Assist in coordination and development of outpatient based service of departing inpatients.
  • Ensure that chart documentation, including electronic medical records, on patients under his/her care is accurately completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain appropriate standards to meet MOC requirements in Internal Medicine and appropriate CME credit required for licensure in the State of Kansas.
  • Maintain appropriate supervisory skill to promote exceptional and quality of care on inpatient teaching services.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient care activities of medical students and resident physicians, providing timely verbal and written feedback to medical students and resident physicians.
  • Regularly attend, participate, and lead in scheduled teaching conference for resident physicians at our community hospital(s) and at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita.
  • Communicate frequently and directly, verbally and in writing, with the residency program director and student clerkship director regarding any resident physician or medical student performance issues or program policy issues.
  • Develop and deliver seminars for resident physicians and medical students including board review for resident physicians, and subject examination review for medical students, as needed.
  • Actively participate in the standardized patient program, clerkship oral examinations, the clinical skills program and similar ground activities with medical students, as needed.
  • Regularly attend and participate in residency/department conferences as required by the residency program director or department chair.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and provides written documentation of scholarly activity.
  • Assist at least two residents annually in the development and completion of a scholarly activity.
  • Develop and maintain skills in use of modern informational systems required for competent patient care.
  • Strive to stay current in issues concerning advancement in general internal medicine and care of hospitalized patients.
  • Participate in full-time faculty meetings, ongoing faculty development programs and works to improve teaching skills and effectiveness.
  • Serve on department, university and/or hospital committees, as needed.
  • Develop a personal professional growth plan with the chair.
