The primary responsibility of the Hospital Outpatient Coder III position will be to work through the extreme complex coding and charging structure for interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and other high risk outpatient coding encounters to ensure the highest level of code accuracy based on physician documentation. This role plays a key part in billing, research, internal and external reporting, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of interventional cardiology and interventional radiology coding.
  • CPC, CPC-H, CCA, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P certified.
  • Must complete coding proficiency evaluation.
  • Anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, clinical pharmacology.
  • Basic PC skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work through the extreme complex coding and charging structure for interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and other high risk outpatient coding encounters to ensure the highest level of code accuracy based on physician documentation.
  • Use clinical coding expertise based on the Official Coding Guidelines, AHA Coding Clinic, and the Society of Interventional Radiology to assign ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes.
  • Work closely with charging staff, physicians, clinical documentation improvement specialist, quality, and patient finance staff.
  • Play a key role in billing, research, internal and external reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Follow-up on CCI edits, claim rejections, CDM and other issues impacting the quality and facilitation of billing and reimbursement.
  • Ensure accuracy of APCs, CPT code links for IR procedures, and appropriate extraction of core data into HIM abstracting system to data warehouse repository.
