About The Position

The primary responsibility of this position involves working with the extremely complex coding and charging structure for interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and other high-risk outpatient coding encounters. The goal is to ensure the highest level of code accuracy based on physician documentation. This role is crucial for billing, research, internal and external reporting, and regulatory compliance, requiring close collaboration with charging staff, physicians, clinical documentation improvement specialists, quality, and patient finance staff. The incumbent will also ensure the accuracy of APCs, CPT code links for IR procedures, and appropriate extraction of core data into the HIM abstracting system to the data warehouse repository.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of interventional cardiology and interventional radiology coding.
  • CPC, CPC-H, CCA, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P certified.
  • Must complete coding proficiency evaluation.
  • Anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, clinical pharmacology, basic PC skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work through the extreme complex coding and charging structure for interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and other high risk outpatient coding encounters to ensure the highest level of code accuracy based on physician documentation.
  • Uses clinical coding expertise based on the Official Coding Guidelines, AHA Coding Clinic, and the Society of Interventional Radiology to assign ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes.
  • Works closely with charging staff, physicians, clinical documentation improvement specialist, quality, and patient finance staff.
  • Plays a key role in billing, research, internal and external reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Follows-up on CCI edits, claim rejections, CDM and other issues impacting the quality and facilitation of billing and reimbursement.
  • Ensure accuracy of APCs, CPT code links for IR procedures, and appropriate extraction of core data into HIM abstracting system to data warehouse repository.
