About The Position

Position Summary Hospice Volunteers at Haven Home Health and Hospice play an essential role in bringing comfort, dignity, and support to patients and families during the end-of-life journey. Volunteers may serve in two capacities: Direct Care Volunteer – Provides companionship and support directly to patients and their families. Indirect Care Volunteer – Supports the hospice team through office tasks, clerical work, community outreach, and event support. Whether providing a listening ear, offering a comforting presence, or assisting with behind-the-scenes tasks, volunteers use their unique gifts to make a meaningful difference. Time commitments vary based on activity, typically ranging from 1–6 hours per week.

Requirements

  • No significant personal loss within the past 12 months (evaluation required if applicable).
  • Availability of time and skills related to chosen volunteer role.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect boundaries.
  • Empathetic listening and communication skills.
  • Comfort with end-of-life care settings and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work independently while following direction.
  • Basic computer/office skills (for Indirect Care Volunteers).
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance (for Direct Care Volunteers).

Responsibilities

  • Complete required hospice volunteer training program.
  • Maintain accurate visit notes, timesheets, and documentation.
  • Communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator at least monthly.
  • Participate in staff development programs and at least 3 in-services per year.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Provide compassionate, reliable, and respectful service.
  • Visit with patients and families to provide companionship.
  • Read to patients, write letters, or play games/cards.
  • Offer caregiver relief and a supportive presence.
  • Run errands, prepare light meals, or assist with household chores.
  • Play music or engage patients in meaningful activities.
  • Participate in bereavement support, memorial services, or funeral assistance (optional).
  • Assist with clerical work: data entry, filing, copying, or mailings.
  • Help prepare newsletters, outreach materials, and event support.
  • Make “tuck-in calls” to patients/families before weekends or holidays.
  • Support marketing and community engagement initiatives.
