About The Position

Augusta is seeking an experienced HDD Locator to support our telecommunications construction projects as we build another HDD crew during our expansion. The HDD Locator is responsible for accurately tracking and guiding horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations using a Falcon F5+ locating system to ensure the safe and precise installation of underground utilities—primarily telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic and conduit systems. This hands-on role plays a critical safety function by preventing utility strikes, maintaining bore accuracy, and ensuring compliance with project plans, safety regulations, and utility standards. The ideal candidate will work closely with the drill operator, crews, and project supervisors to deliver clean, accurate, and efficient bores. Location: Grand Rapids, MI (travel required throughout Michigan)

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience with telecommunications, horizontal directional drilling preferred.
  • Proficiency using Falcon F5+ or similar locating systems required.
  • Strong understanding of underground utility marking and utility avoidance practices.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the state of Michigan as projects require.
  • Commitment to safe, high-quality, and efficient work practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating or working alongside Vermeer drills preferred.
  • CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the Falcon F5+ locator to track and guide Vermeer directional drills (primarily Vermeer D20x22) during HDD operations.
  • Monitor and record bore progress, depths, and alignments to ensure accurate as-built documentation.
  • Identify and avoid existing underground utilities using maps, locates, and field verification.
  • Communicate clearly with drill operators and crew to ensure safe and productive drilling operations.
  • Assist with setup, operation, and teardown of the drill and related equipment.
  • Maintain equipment and tools in clean and functional condition.
  • Adhere to company safety policies, traffic control plans, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Support project quality control and reporting requirements.
