About The Position

Horizons at New Canaan Country School is seeking exceptional SEL Coach candidates for our summer program. The Coach is responsible for the planning and execution of their summer SEL curriculum for all students and for creating a program environment that supports the Horizons mission of inspiring learning, encouraging success and feeling affirmed in their leadership. The Coach will be called upon to assist students who need additional one-on-one support. Please read the information below before you continue with this application: About Horizons Started in 1964 as a small summer program, Horizons at New Canaan Country School has grown to be a full-year K-Grade 12 academic and enrichment program serving close to 400 students from Stamford and Norwalk. The program aims to help close the opportunity gap experienced by under-resourced students by providing opportunities for academic and overall personal development so that they are able to pursue their dreams and fulfill their ultimate potential. About the Horizons Summer Program The six-week summer program hosted at New Canaan Country School is for K-9 students. Students have a daily schedule that includes academics, enrichments (including sports, art, music, woodshop, STEAM and social emotional learning), and daily afternoon swim. Class size is 10-12 students and the teacher, aided by a Teaching Assistant, has the opportunity to design a curriculum that fits the needs of the students, emphasizing project-based learning and creative ways of teaching content. We have a veteran and diverse faculty who share a commitment to our students and their families. When will the Horizons Summer Program start and end? We are planning to hold an in-person orientation for new staff on June 18, 2026, and an in-person full-day orientation on June 20, 2026, for all staff. The summer program will begin on June 22, 2026, and end on July 31, 2026. How much is the compensation for this position? SEL Coach will earn a starting stipend of $6,500 for the summer. Responsibilities: The Summer Program SEL Coach supports the social-emotional learning and overall well-being of elementary students in a summer learning program. The coach works directly with students in grades K–5 to model positive behavior, build emotional awareness, and foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. Responsibilities include leading age-appropriate SEL activities, supporting classroom teachers, helping students practice self-regulation and conflict-resolution skills, and providing positive behavior guidance throughout the day. The SEL Coach also collaborates with staff to reinforce routines, transitions, and community-building activities. Experience working with elementary-aged children and knowledge of social-emotional learning practices are preferred.

  • Ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues in a short period of time
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, respectfully and inclusively with individuals from diverse cultural, social and professional backgrounds
  • Strong organizational and systems skills; can manage multiple projects and adapt to challenges and changes
  • Teaching experience of at least 2 years preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; education major preferred
  • Can operate virtual classroom technology (e.g., SmartBoard, Google Classroom, Zoom, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Creating and implementing an SEL curriculum for students
  • Execute the curriculum during the 6-week summer program. Students attend the program from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • Create an environment that supports the Horizons mission of inspiring learning, encouraging success and feeling affirmed in their leadership.
  • Develop specialized plans for students on an as-needed basis.
  • Address students in need throughout the day
