About The Position

The Ho-Chunk Renaissance Program Director will be responsible for the overall management of the Ho-Chunk Renaissance Program, including coordination, integration, and implementation of all resources and services necessary to meet the programs goals. The Ho-Chunk Renaissance Program Director will be responsible for program management, grant administration, and professional work in managing the programs initiatives and grants. Furthermore, the Ho-Chunk Renaissance Program Director is responsible for providing enrichment opportunities to sustain, preserve, and revitalize the Ho-Chunk Language for all tribal membership and Winnebago Community.

Requirements

  • Must have supervisory experience of at least 3-5 years.
  • Must demonstrate ethical and professional behavior at all times.
  • Must demonstrate effective communication, decision-making, leadership, critical and analytical thinking, research skills, information and computer literacy, strategic planning, problem-solving, and time management, and organizational skills.
  • Must be an active learner of the Ho-Chunk language.
  • Must have a reasonable mastery of the English language and be able to write professionally and independently.
  • Must be willing to submit a background check as mandated by the Tribal Policies and Procedures of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
  • Must possess a willingness to work with Program staff and teachers from the schools on language development.
  • Must have intimate knowledge of tribal values, social customs, material culture, and other aspects of Ho-Chunk culture, or desire to learn.
  • Must possess the ability to work efficiently with a wide variety of people in a team environment.
  • Must possess strong leadership skills and the ability to get along with other people.
  • Must be able to work with little supervision in completing the goals and objectives of the program.
  • Must be willing to work with children.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be insurable or maintain insurance.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and met driver’s eligibility guidelines for tribal insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Computer literacy and proficiency in the Ho-Chunk (IPA) writing system will be considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values.
  • Prepare the annual budget and operating plan for the department in which will establish specific goals and objectives.
  • Create a strategic 5-year plan and implements new processes and approaches to achieve it.
  • Provides internal leadership abilities with the annual operations, planning, training, and budgeting.
  • Leading the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress in comparison with the Annual operating plan and strategic plan goals of the program.
  • Implement and monitor specific goals and objectives, short and long-term goals of the program.
  • Adept at accounting functions and be responsible for using internal fiscal accounting systems and controls, and all appropriate internal operating systems.
  • Responsible for actively seeking grant sources and arrange grant proposal preparation and management.
  • Responsible for programmatic responsibilities including; ensuring that all obligations, contracts, initiatives are either renewed, reviewed, and/or completed.
  • Responsible for managing grant progress and completing grant reports as required in a timely and efficient manner as specified by the granting agency.
  • Continually strive to develop staff with competent training in all areas of culture, oral history, language, archival skills, and professional development.
  • Identify growth and funding opportunities to expand language efforts in the tribal community we serve.
  • Responsible for communicating with tribal membership of the status of the Ho-Chunk language including projects, goals, and updates in the local paper or other related sources.
  • Develop creative strategies to strengthen language in community, including but not limited to, coordinating special organizational events for language material disbursement, display of language revitalization on signs, billboards, etc.
  • Responsible for creating a cultural dual-language immersion (Ho-Chunk) plan for a classroom environment that ensures learning and personal growth of every student;
  • Responsible in overseeing the Deputy Director duties in supervising the development of a structured Ho-Chunk language curriculum. Including but not limited to Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment development areas.
  • Will research and network with other tribal language programs or language-orientated organizations to further aid in developmental contributions to the Ho-Chunk Renaissance program.
  • Will actively seek native speakers in an effort to preserve the Ho-Chunk language and increase the speaker resources of the Tribe. This will include seeking native speakers that may live off the reservation.
  • Knowledge with computers, software and internet for digitizing learning materials to be utilized, cataloged, archived, and appropriately disburse to community and tribal members.
  • Will actively seek new technological learning tools to implement within language development, including but not limited to, website development, social media, audio materials, digital computer apps, and digitizing hardware & software.
  • Work toward proficiency in reading and writing the Ho-Chunk language utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and related keyboarding.
  • Organizing and/or participating in Program-sponsored community events, youth events, and activities as directed.
  • Interact with the general public, students, and other tribal employees with tact, courtesy, respect, objectivity, and maturity.
  • Actively observe Ho-Chunk language classes to assure program contractual obligations are met.
  • Actively participate in Ho-Chunk language assessments as a learner.
  • Supervise personnel within the Ho-Chunk Renaissance program.
  • Make employment and termination decisions consistent with tribal policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
