About The Position

Join #TeamWake as a Public Health Educator! The Health Education and Outreach Team plays a vital role in advancing the HIV and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (HIV/STD) Community Program within the Wake County Public Health Department. This team brings public health education beyond clinic walls and into the community, using connection, creativity, and evidence-based strategies to reduce risk, increase awareness, and prevent HIV and STD transmission. This position also leverages social media, mobile applications, and other technologies to promote HIV/STD education and testing. The ideal candidate has experience working in community-based settings and is comfortable engaging with individuals who may be navigating complex life circumstances. NOTE: Upon acceptance of employment you acknowledge that (i) if you work in the Health Clinics and Public Health Division, influenza immunization is a condition of initial and continued employment, subject to compliance with federal law, (ii) actively supports and participates in department emergency preparedness and response activities, which may include temporary changes in responsibilities and working hours. In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years of job-related experience
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • Knowledge of HIV/STD
  • Basic Knowledge on Community Building and Resources
  • Basic knowledge on substance abuse
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Build and maintain positive, productive relationships with peers, colleagues, and supervisors/management
  • Confident in working with at-risk and diverse populations
  • Demonstrate a high degree of adaptability, comfortable with work changes and new directions
  • Ability to convey HIV/STD and health information clearly and concisely to individuals and groups to ensure they understand the information and the message
  • Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others
  • Excellent customer and client services skills
  • Enjoys working in a team environment
  • Computer skills including Microsoft-Word and PowerPoint are required
  • Knowledge of Audio-Visual Equipment operation is very important
  • Ability to put others at ease quickly when discussing intimate subjects
  • Ability, desire, willingness to work individually and as a team member with populations at-risk for HIV/STDs

Nice To Haves

  • High level of knowledge of HIV/STD prevention, transmission, symptoms and disease progression
  • Non-judgmental and exhibit a passion for HIV/STD prevention through prior work or volunteer experience
  • Experience in culturally competent, multi-session, curriculum-based program design and implementation
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with outgoing, engaging personality
  • Exhibit a high level of understanding, comfort and experience in discussing human sexuality and sexual activities including sexual identities, sexual orientation and been able to understand slang and clinical terms
  • Additional skills in Publisher, and Excel are preferred
  • Knowledge in working with social media such as Webpage, Facebook, Apps etc

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and deliver age-appropriate, interactive, and culturally competent HIV/STD and Hepatitis C education programs using evidence-based curriculum
  • Conduct community outreach activities, education sessions, and screenings in collaboration with internal teams and community partners
  • Engage and educate diverse populations, with an emphasis on youth and young adults
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with community organizations, agencies, and key stakeholders serving priority populations
  • Use social media, mobile applications, and other technology to promote HIV/STD education, prevention, and testing
  • Work respectfully and effectively with marginalized populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use or mental health challenges, incarceration, commercial sex work, and transitional housing
  • Collect, document, and submit required program data and narrative reports
  • Communicate public health information clearly, accurately, and professionally to community members and health professionals
