About The Position

It's more than a career, it's a calling WI-SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Madison Worker Type: Regular Job Highlights: This is a full time day shift Histotechnician position for St. Mary's Hospital in Madison working 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a total of 40 hours per week. No weekends or holidays! Certified and experienced candidates are preferred and encouraged to apply. Also open to uncertified candidates with a strong interest in histology/pathology. A one-time sign on bonus is available to qualified individuals for up to $10,000 (less taxes) with a 2 year service commitment. Job Summary: Performs general histological duties, under direct supervision, according to established procedures as well as preparation of histologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologist.

Requirements

• Associate's degree or equivalent years of experience and education
• No experience required
• Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
• Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
• Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication.
• Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
• Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
• Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
• Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
• Rare climbing.

Responsibilities

• Collects, labels, processes and preserves tissue specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
• Prepares sections of tissue for immediate examination, using frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain specimens.
• Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by the pathologist.
• Performs embedding, cutting, and staining of tissues and pathology specimens received.
• Performs basic histology special stains using manual or automated methods as appropriate.
• Maintains equipment in histology as required.
• Performs calibration and troubleshooting on test systems and instruments.
• Cleans and maintains adequate laboratory supplies and work areas.
• Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
• Performs general histological duties as well as cytology specimen prep work.
• May complete High Complexity Testing as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489.
• Analyzes and records data.
• Assists in the proficiency testing program in the lab.
• Maintains competencies and continuing education to keep informed of new developments in field.
• Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
