About The Position

The Histotechnician (HT) will support the Department of Pathology and Ancillary Laboratory Services (DPALS) at Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Joint Base San Antonio, located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas

Requirements

  • Graduate from a Histology or Anatomic Pathology training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
  • Associate’s Degree certificate in: Histotechnology, Histologic Technology (HT), Histologic Technician, Histology Technician (HT), Histopathology, Histotechnician (HT), or Anatomic Pathology
  • Possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Possess and maintain active registration/certification through ASCP or AMT
  • Minimum one (1) year experience within the last two (2) years post graduation as a Histotechnician (HT)
  • Possess attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite

Responsibilities

  • Perform grossing tasks, including inspecting specimens, describing, and measuring tissue, inking, and sectioning tissue.
  • Examine specimens for the pathologist's review.
  • Section the tissue for processing and diagnosis.
  • Ensure accurate tissue processing for diagnosis.
  • Process tissue specimens through fixation, dehydration, embedding, and microtomy, preparing high-quality tissue blocks and slides for accurate pathological evaluation.
  • Determine appropriate handling and tissue processing for specimens, and priorities on requested procedures.
  • Produce high-quality microscopic slides.
  • Cut tissue sections using microtomes and cryostats, creating thin, uniform sections mounted on slides, ensuring optimal clarity and detail for microscopic examination by pathologists.
  • Examine microscopically all stained slides and controls to determine accuracy of last test and make modification to the procedure as needed.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and reagents.
  • Perform routine maintenance on histopathology equipment (microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, stainers) and manage reagents, ensuring optimal functionality and minimizing downtime. Implement quality control measures.
  • Adhere to strict quality control procedures throughout the histopathology process, monitoring reagent performance, verifying slide quality, and identifying potential errors. Contribute to efficient laboratory operations.
  • Manage workflow, organize specimens, and maintain a clean and organized work environment, contributing to the overall efficiency of the histopathology laboratory.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
  • Comply with all safety regulations, infection control protocols, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements, safeguarding the health and safety of staff and maintaining accreditation standards.
  • Prepare and examine solutions for contamination, impurities, or instability.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration.
  • Interact effectively with pathologists and other laboratory personnel, providing technical support and ensuring seamless communication within the histopathology team.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain the confidentiality of all patient information, adhering to HIPAA regulations.
  • Manage inventory and supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of reagents, supplies, and other materials, ensuring adequate resources for timely specimen processing.
  • Retrieve and store specimens properly for long term storage.
  • Other duties as assigned
