About The Position

Urology of Virginia (UVA) has a long history of providing comprehensive and quality care to the entire Hampton Roads region, including northeastern North Carolina. Our clinical care team consists of board-certified urologists, most of whom are fellowship-trained, nationally recognized, awarded, and published. Working in a team-based environment, our mission is to help patients optimize their urological health. Urology of Virginia’s specialized clinical care team includes an in-house laboratory focusing on urological lab testing. We are seeking an experienced Histotech (HTL or HT) to work in our Surgical Pathology Lab located in Virginia Beach. This is a Monday thru Friday daytime position working 30-40 hrs/week with Full-time benefits.

Requirements

Minimum education - completion of an NAACLS accredited Histologic Technician program
HT certification or eligible (ASCP or U.S. Dept. of H&HS approved certifying agency)
Minimum experience - 3 years of histopathology
Good verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail
Proficient in Microsoft Office computer and keyboarding skills
Strong interpersonal skills needed for operational efficiency working in a small lab setting and to provide excellent customer service for Urology of Virginia

BS w/ HTL certification
IHC experience
Knowledge/experience with CLIA and/or CAP certification & protocol writing

Responsibilities

Maintain an adequate inventory of pathology supplies and maintain the proper storage of hazardous and viable lab items, dating when received and noting expiration dates
Perform the grossing, processing, embedding, and cutting of all surgical tissue specimens to prepare labeled cassettes and slides for H&E staining and cover slipping according to our procedures. IHC slides will be processed when requested by pathologist
Maintain all pathology lab equipment according to manuals, perform preventative maintenance (PM) according to lab’s procedures/protocols. Document and date details of all equipment problems and inform Lab Supervisor and/or Pathologist of such. Coordinate with Lab Supervisor to schedule service when needed. Maintain records of all service reports and both telephone and written communication with tech support in the equipment manual
Maintain proper documentation of quality control and quality assurance for stained & IHC slides, as well as logs for temperature, humidity, pH, air vapor monitoring, and grossing data
Enter grossing information in LIS for each case
Assist Lab Supervisor in preparing QA reports involving a problem with surgical tissue affecting processing and/or reporting
Submit any recommendations for changes concerning laboratory testing and technical procedures to the Lab Supervisor and Lab Director for approval. Submit all non-technical administrative recommendations to the Lab Supervisor
Be knowledgeable of current CLIA regulations and perform all duties according to CLIA, OSHA and HIPAA regulations
Participate in the revision of procedures in our manual or drafting of new procedures due to changes made per Lab Director, manufacturer, and/or CLIA/CAP regulations
Participate in preparations for CLIA inspections
Perform other lab duties as needed or requested by the Lab Supervisor or Lab Director
