Job Summary Summary Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis. Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Graduate Certificate Histology preferred
• Clinical or Histology experience 1-2 years required
• Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcifications, processing, embedding, routine and special stains and frozen sections.
• Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).
• Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
• Participates in relevant continuing education programs.

Responsibilities

• Performs specimen collection, accessioning, and logging routines.
• Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.
• Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
• Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording temperatures on various instruments, changing processors per procedure, and replacing staining solutions.
• Ensures aseptic techniques and follows health and safety protocols during cleanup procedures to minimize risk to self and co-workers.
• Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
