Job Summary Summary Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Graduate Certificate Histology preferred
  • Clinical or Histology experience 2-3 years required
  • Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcifications, processing, embedding, routine and special stains and frozen sections.
  • Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Participates in relevant continuing education programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen collection, accessioning, and logging routines.
  • Assist pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.
  • Process, embed, and section tissues for slides.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording instrument temperatures, changing processors per procedure, and replacing staining solutions.
  • Ensure aseptic techniques and observe health and safety protocols during cleanup procedures to minimize risk to self and co-workers.
  • Observe hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintain a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
