About The Position

The Biorepository and Tissue Analysis (BTA) Shared Resource (SR) Operations Manager at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) is recruiting for a Histology Technician. Summary: Under direct supervision this individual will perform research histologic procedures on human and animal tissues to include but not limited to routine histology, processing and embedding, special stains, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence procedures, and microtomy/cryotomy sectioning for microscopic examination.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a health-related field and one year journey-level work experience in the specialty area; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a health-related field and two years advanced work experience in the specialty area.
  • A master's degree in a health-related field and six months entry-level experience may be substituted for the requirements stated above.
  • Previous technical supervisory work experience is required for supervisory positions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts as required.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.

Responsibilities

  • Processing, embedding, sectioning tissue: Under direct supervision this individual will perform research histologic procedures on human and animal tissues to include but not limited to routine histology, processing and embedding, and microtomy/cryotomy sectioning for microscopic examination
  • Staining of tissue: Individual will perform staining of tissues with special stains, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence procedures, both manual and automated.
  • Slide scanning and image acquisition: Individual will set up whole slide scanner for initial image acquisition for chromogenic (brightfield) and immunofluorescence staining.
  • Inventory/lab management: Individual will monitor reagent inventory and order as needed.
  • Communication of results: Individual will work with colleagues, researchers and supervisor to communicate results, troubleshoot and for clarification when needed.
  • Instrument maintenance: Individual will perform general instrument maintenance and schedule preventive maintenance as well as emergency repairs when needed.
