A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. This close-knit team is known for their teamwork and collaboration. This team is driven and strives to provide quality patient results daily. A caregiver in this role works variable shifts from 11:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. with weekend requirements.

Requirements

  • High School education
  • Current license in the State of Florida at the Histology or Cytology Technologist level

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree or higher from a NACCLS approved Histotechnology program OR a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Biological Science
  • HT/L (ASCP) certification
  • Two years of hospital experience
  • Ability to work with tissue processors

Responsibilities

  • Process all cytology, biopsy, and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas.
  • Perform immunocytochemical stains and assist the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections.
  • Arrange for submission of various tissue and gynecological specimens, which include thin preps and prepared smears to reference laboratories.
  • Report pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor (i.e. instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent, or supply depletion.)
  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas and keep work areas organized and stocked.
  • Follow safety procedures and utilize all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol.
  • Follow procedures and refer to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed.
  • Be proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follow trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.
  • Ensure instrument operations and results are reliable and perform maintenance checks, startups, and/or shutdowns as assigned or as required.
  • Answer telephones, greet customers, and provide consults and technical support to the pathologists, physicians, and nursing staff.
  • Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.
