About The Position

A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. Your work helps to provide a timely and accurate processing of patient specimens to support diagnosis and treatment for a variety of situations. A caregiver in this position works 20-25 hours per week, Monday-Friday, from 12:00PM – 5:00PM. Martin North Hospital will be the primary work location, but floating to Martin South and Tradition Hospitals will be required, as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current license in the State of Florida at the Histology or Cytology Technologist level

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree or higher from a NACCLS approved Histotechnology program OR a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the Chemical or Biological Sciences
  • Histotechnologist (HTL) Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Two years of hospital experience

Responsibilities

  • Process all cytology, biopsy and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas.
  • Perform immunocytochemical stains and assist the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections.
  • Arrange for submission of various tissue and gynecological specimens, which include thin preps and prepared smears to reference laboratories.
  • Report pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor (e.g., instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent or supply depletion).
  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas and keep work areas organized and stocked.
  • Follow safety procedures and utilize all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol.
  • Follow procedures and refer to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed.
  • Be proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follow trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.
  • Ensure instrument operations and results are reliable and perform maintenance checks, startups and/or shutdowns as assigned or as required.
  • Answer telephones, greet customers and provide consults and technical support to the pathologists, physicians and nursing staff.
  • Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.
