About The Position

WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to join our Southwest Region maintenance team and support our mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options across Washington State. In this journey-level role, you will operate a wide range of highway equipment and tools to maintain and repair highways, structures, and related infrastructure. You may also take on crew-lead responsibilities in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, contributing to efficient operations and project success. This position plays a key role in ensuring the safe movement of people and commerce while promoting a respectful, healthy, and inclusive work environment. The typical schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, working four 10-hour days each week; however, weekends and holidays may be required for emergency callouts. Employees must be able to report to the duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call and may be assigned alternate or emergency shifts as needed. This role requires responding to emergencies in all weather conditions, 24/7, working long hours, including some nights, and may involve occasional standby and call-back.

Requirements

  • Highway Maintenance Expertise: Practical knowledge of highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal. Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Equipment Operation: Skilled in operating and maintaining various Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles following WSDOT standards. Proven ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
  • Traffic Control & Work Zone Operations: Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels.
  • Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS). Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Teamwork & Crew Leadership: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field. Capable of leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, demonstrating sound decision-making and leadership skills.

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N endorsement.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR Certification within 6 months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging cardwithin six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by. Must be able to report in service to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day highway maintenance, including pavement repair, drainage upkeep, erosion control, sign and guardrail repair, and vegetation management.
  • Apply concrete, asphalt, synthetic materials, and Best Management Practices (BMPs) as needed for maintenance and repair activities.
  • Operate and haul materials with various equipment, including transporting rip rap, asphalt, sand, gravel, and other roadway materials.
  • Track and document daily work activities while maintaining accurate inventory and conducting highway section patrols.
  • Maintain roadways for open travel by performing snow and ice control, removing debris, litter, and dead animals, and supporting stockpile site upkeep.
  • Conduct routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs on tools, vehicles, and machinery to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Assist in the cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings at the Dismal Nitch rest area, coordinating with law enforcement and ensuring safe handling of hazardous materials.
  • Lead and train crew members in the absence of the HMW3 by planning work activities, assigning tasks, and providing equipment instruction.
