About The Position

WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 - Pavement Marking to join our regional maintenance team in supporting safe and efficient travel across Washington's highways. This position will work with the Northwest Region specialized Sign crew on installation, fabrication, and repair of highway signs within the state transportation system. This position will also provide critical support to the Northwest Region (NWR) Striping and Pavement Marking crews throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain light and heavy equipment used in roadway, excavation, agricultural, or similar maintenance environments.
  • Ability to operate commercial vehicles requiring a Class A CDL, without air brake restrictions and Tanker endorsement (N).
  • Skilled in the safe and effective use of common hand tools such as shovels, posthole diggers, and pry bars for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Competent in operating power tools and equipment including drills, rivet guns, rotary hammers, blowers, jackhammers, and pavement grinders.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and professionally through both verbal and written communication.
  • Proficient in basic computer use, including data entry and accessing digital systems to support documentation and reporting.
  • Demonstrates the ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to set up, manage, and remove traffic control systems in accordance with federal and state standards to ensure worker and public safety.
  • Skilled in the layout, preparation, and installation of pavement markings following WSDOT standard plans and specifications.
  • Ability to perform traffic control activities consistent with WSDOT M54-44 and MUTCD requirements, ensuring proper placement, visibility, and operation of all devices.
  • Ability to perform basic emergency response and first-aid actions consistent with CPR competencies.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to install and remove highway signs.
  • Ability to take inventory of signs and hardware.
  • Ability to assemble, repair and install shoulder mount, structure mount, and overhead signs per standard plans.
  • Plan traffic control for daily operations.
  • Provide flagging for work zones.
  • Operate Thermoplastic applicator.
  • Train and mentor new employees.
  • Install and maintain raised pavement marking and durable markings.
  • Refresh striping throughout the NWR.
